Since Dr. Lindsay Privette鈥檚 book The Surgeon鈥檚 Battle: How Medicine Won the Vicksburg Campaign and Changed the Civil War was released this past September, it has been gaining attention in history circles. New Books Network about her book April 4.

Dr. Privette is a professor in the Department of History and Political Science of the 91福利社 College of Arts and Sciences. Her book takes a unique look at the Civil War through the lens of healthcare.鈥疪ather than focusing on鈥疻ashington and battles in the east, Dr. Privette鈥檚 book pulls things farther west.听

Dr. Privette鈥檚 fascination for the Civil War came at an early age when she grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi, site of the historic Siege of Vicksburg, a crucial campaign. She recalls many family trips to the historic battlefield and even worked briefly as a ranger at the Vicksburg National Military Park.

At Vicksburg, in addition to battle-sustained injuries, there were illnesses related to Union soldiers being in an environment they weren鈥檛 accustomed to, as they dealt with southern heat and humidity as well as mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria. Despite it all, Union forces prevailed over the Confederate Army in the end.

In Dr. Privette’s book is an exploration of the interrelationship and tensions that often arose between medical professionals and Union Army leadership. Lessons learned early in the war and their impact on the effectiveness of rendering medical aid in the field and at military hospitals are examined in the book.听

鈥淚 think medicine in the Civil War is something that really intrigues people when they stop to think about it, and one of the things I’m noticing is that a lot of people haven’t听 stopped to think about it quite yet,” Dr. Privette said. 鈥淲hat my book is really doing is creating some of these conversations.鈥

While Dr. Privette points out that the germ theory hadn鈥檛 yet been established, medical officials were starting collect information to help practitioners understand how different surgical techniques affect their patients and codify prognoses to make more informed decisions at the operating table. William Hammond, a career medical officer who became surgeon general during the war years, helped spur on improvements in the medical care of soldiers.

鈥淭his particular book intersects at a lot of different places that people would find interesting,” she said. 鈥淓ven though I talk to other scholars, it’s written for a general person who just enjoys Civil War history or enjoys reading history.鈥

Dr. Privette adds, 鈥淥ne of the things I think so interesting about studying Civil War history is that no matter how bleak some current day things may be, we’ve seen some pretty dark times in our nation’s history in the past and we’ve recovered and were听 unified on the back end of that.鈥

The Surgeon鈥檚 Battle: How Medicine Won the Vicksburg Campaign and Changed the Civil War has been reviewed by Library Journal (American Library Association) and other reviewers specializing in Civil War history.

鈥淏ased on a wide range of military correspondence, surgeons鈥 reports, and other records, this concise book will fascinate and educate readers interested in the U.S. Civil War and medical history,鈥 said an online review in the Library Journal.

A review in Emerging Civil War (emergingcivilwar.com) concludes, 鈥Privette offers readers interested in Civil War medicine and Vicksburg a valuable work that medical adaptability was central to Union success in compelling the Confederates to surrender on that Independence Day morning.鈥

Civil War Books and Authors, an independent, non-fiction American Civil War book review journal, calls Dr. Privette鈥檚 book 鈥a noteworthy addition鈥 to the history of Civil War medicine.

鈥淜eeping in mind the environmental extremes within which the Vicksburg Campaign was fought as well as period limitations in the scientific knowledge of disease processes and transmission,” the review states, 鈥淧rivette’s study nevertheless successfully argues that Grant’s Army of the Tennessee incorporated improvements in medical department organization and practices that were numerous and significant enough to mitigate the effects those unavoidable factors had on soldier health and fighting efficiency.鈥

Dr. Privette hopes in the future to look further at medical providers in terms of how they emotionally dealt with things they saw and did during the war; also how those experiencesimpacted them, both professionally and personally as they transitioned into their postwar lives.

Associate Professor of History Dr. Lynneth Miller Renberg has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award in history to Norway for the 2025-2026 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign鈥
Scholarship Board.鈥

Dr. Renberg, who is on the faculty of the 91福利社 College of Arts and Sciences, will be working as a researcher at the University of Troms, partnering with one of their research centers, Creating the New North, and working with a couple of other academic departments and faculties on campus as she works on her book project.

The book I am going to be working on is using methods from dance studies from history and theology to help us learn more about the construction of community, identity and belief and medieval Finnish Scandia,” Dr. Renberg said. 鈥淲e’ll be looking at encounters between the 厂谩尘颈, the indigenous people who live in the far north of Europe, and medieval European travelers.鈥

Dr. Renberg noted that a challenge in studying relations between these two groups is that the 厂谩尘颈 left few written texts.

鈥淭here is a significant language barrier, and in a lot of the texts that European travelers left, they didn’t record anything from the 厂谩尘颈 and in the 厂谩尘颈‘s own words or perspective, but they described a lot of things, like dances and processions and songs,鈥 Dr. Renberg said. 鈥淚’ll be using methods from dance studies to analyze these texts as well as to analyze material culture like drums and artifacts from 厂谩尘颈 culture and working with 厂谩尘颈 scholars鈥攂oth people who study 厂谩尘颈 and individuals who are 厂谩尘颈 to understand in these first encounters what Europeans thought about the 厂谩尘颈, what they believed, how did the 厂谩尘颈 understand Europeans and what Europeans believed, and how can reading history more expansively using performance as a way to understand what happened in the past help us better understand these past encounters when we don’t have written sources.鈥

Fulbright U.S. Scholars are faculty, researchers, administrators and established professionals teaching or conducting research in affiliation with institutes abroad. Fulbright Scholars engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks, often continuing research collaborations started abroad and laying the groundwork for forging future partnerships between institutions. The national history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta, annually recognizes the best chapters at colleges and universities of different sizes. This year, 91福利社鈥檚 chapter, Alpha Rho Epsilon, received two honors: Best Chapter for Division II Schools (3,000-6,000 students) and the Journal Award, recognizing undergraduate print journals, for Res Historica, Anderson鈥檚 student-produced historical journal.

The third volume of Res Historica placed third in the nation under the leadership of recent graduate and past Phi Alpha Theta President Johnathan Sorce and current senior Samuel Sanders. This is the second year in a row Res Historica has been recognized as an award-winning journal.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited that our chapter is receiving recognition for its amazing work,鈥 said History and Political Science major Gracie Hembree. 鈥淚t makes me super proud of my program, because I’m on the inside of it and I know how awesome it is just from having the experiences with my professors.鈥

This past year, the Alpha Rho Epsilon chapter sent students to conferences, published their journal Res Historica, ran a workshop on careers in history, inducted several new members and sponsored a Women鈥檚 History Month lecture.听

鈥淚t was a wonderful opportunity for both Dr. Renberg and several of our history majors to attend and participate in the conference,鈥 said Chair of the Department of History and Political Science Dr. Roger Flynn. 鈥淓ngaging with leading scholars and exploring current research trends in the field not only enriched Dr. Renberg’s teaching but also provided our students with a unique opportunity that enhanced their academic and professional growth.鈥

Hembree commented that attending the recent conference in her hometown of Spartanburg built up her confidence.

鈥淧eople were there from all over the area鈥攁ll different types of people and they all loved the same thing;. History can be really connecting,” Hembree said. 鈥淚t really has helped me gain confidence in just knowing the vibes of a conference… My friends and I are going to a conference in January and I am presenting. I think if I hadn’t gone to this conference and seen the way that it was, I would have been too nervous. It’s been very helpful.鈥

AU History majors have developed unique ways for individuals to become immersed in history. An example is Augustus, a role-playing game (participants pictured above) developed by Sorce, which brings to life the people and politics of the Byzantine era in Eastern Europe. Logan Davis, a double major in History and Accounting, said, 鈥It was a blast, so much so that I felt that it was necessary to continue the game and make it a mainstay at AU.鈥

I think that by participating in the game and in the running of the game, it can really help you, whether you’re a history student or not. It helps you to understand concepts and systems, like the Byzantine royal system… It helps you to better connect with those time periods and the events that are happening,鈥 said Sanders, who is a double major in History and Secondary Social Studies Education.听

According to Hembree, history students were also able to engage in comprehensive research on the Morris Street cabins, a significant landmark of African-American history built before the Civil War.听 This research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Lindsay Privette, another history faculty member.

鈥淲e were able to access older maps and really get into that part of history, which is cooler than I thought it was going to be because I mostly research secondary sources,鈥 Hembree said. 鈥淭his was actually creating our own research.鈥

An interdisciplinary team of professors and education majors at 91福利社 developed resources that will help students understand the Revolutionary War in new ways. The Traveling Trunks offer K-12 teachers and community educators South Carolina standards-aligned American Revolutionary War units with resources.听

Across two academic years, Associate Professor of History Dr. Lindsay Privette led the Traveling Trunks team that included Drs. Jayson Evaniuck and Tanya Espinosa Cordoba of the College of Education, and current education student Bailey Williams, along with several secondary social studies students who have since graduated.

Part of the Traveling Trunks team gave a presentation at the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies conference, held recently in Rock Hill, South Carolina. According to Dr. Cordoba, the presentation was well-received by the conference audience, composed primarily of middle school teachers from across the state, along with a few high school teachers.

Drs. Evaniuck, Privette and Cordoba, collaborating with Williams and recent secondary social studies graduate Kacey King, presented on the Revolution War traveling trunk sets they initially created for Anderson County.听

鈥淲e鈥檙e just really proud of our students getting up there and helping lead,鈥 Dr. Cordoba said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a good opportunity for them, while also spreading the word about the trunks, because we had teachers from all over the state present at the presentation.鈥

The Traveling Trunk project that was presented was grant-funded through the South Carolina Revolutionary War AR250 initiative, which marks the two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the conflict that birthed the United States.听

鈥淭he state put together committees for every county. Dr. Privette is on the Anderson committee and came up with the idea for a set of traveling trunks. Her not being a teacher, she thought 鈥榣et me bring one of the faculty from the College of Education into it,鈥 so she contacted me,鈥 Dr. Cordoba said. 鈥淲e started talking about what we thought should be in the trunk, the scope and scale, then wrote the grant. When we were awarded the $10,000 grant, we brought the students into it and later Dr. Evaniuck, who was new faculty but jumped right in. The first step was making sure the curriculum in the trunks were standards-aligned, because if a public schoolteacher was going to be able to use this, they had to justify that it was meeting their standards. We then started developing the units.鈥澨

Dr. Cordoba added that units were developed with the Anderson County Museum and the Anderson Public Library community educators in mind, along with homeschool families.听

鈥淭he second step was to consider access and look for a place where it would be housed,听 we were lucky to partner with the Anderson County Library main branch because they can ship the trunks to any of the satellite libraries,鈥 Dr. Cordoba said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 really a great opportunity both for public educators and homeschoolers across our county.鈥

The trunks themselves represent two themes: 鈥淏ecoming America鈥 and 鈥淪outh Carolina and the Revolution.鈥

鈥淲e try to get at a bigger narrative and that鈥檚 all supported by the South Carolina state standards,鈥 Dr. Cordoba said. 鈥淏oth themes include stories and perspectives of underrepresented people groups, such as indigenous, women, as well as enslaved and free Blacks of the Revolutionary War era. The difference between the trunks is the focus given to the wider conflict in the 鈥楤ecoming America鈥 trunk and South Carolina鈥檚 unique role in the 鈥楽C and the Revolutionary War鈥 trunk.鈥

Cordoba added that for each of the themes a primary trunk was created to meet the state鈥檚 fourth-grade standards; and a secondary trunk to meet the eighth-grade state standards for Social Studies, along with U.S. Government and U.S. History.

Initially the trunk project was tried out with a group of homeschool families to get feedback needed to improve the content of the trunks. That, according to Williams, was a good opportunity for her to see the trunk in action.

鈥淲e were able to work through the trunk and any kinks that needed to be worked out鈥攕ee those in real time. And I was able to see how the library adapted that curriculum to what they needed for their homeschool students,鈥 Williams said.

Dr. Cordoba praised Williams鈥 initiative and leadership with the project.

鈥淪he鈥檚 the one who went out to the library and helped to lead the pilot lesson at the library and collaborated with those professionals as a pre-service teacher,鈥 Dr. Cordoba said. 鈥淭hey gave her high praise and said she was wonderful. It鈥檚 important, when we provide our students different ways to grow by noticing their talents and then provide ways for them to live those out.

Williams commented, 鈥I think this project, more so than really anything I’ve done within my classes, helped me get familiar with the standards and how to look at them and dissect them and take what we have to teach and create lessons and projects and interactive activities that can most benefit my students in the future.鈥
