91福利社 Leadership Professor Dr. Chris Rappazini recently published his book, Moving Forward After Messing Up: A New Future with the God of Second Chances, with Moody Publishers.

To promote his book, Dr. Rappazini, who is associate professor of leadership at the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations, has appeared on more than two dozen radio shows and podcasts. He has also appeared on Christian news shows nationwide, including Building Relationships with Gary Chapman, In the Market with Janet Parshall and Chris Fabry Live.

鈥淢y brother inspired me to write this book, but not necessarily in the way one might think,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e hadn鈥檛 been on speaking terms for years. When I finally reached out to inform him of a death in the family, I discovered he had recently been arrested. My brother is a recovering alcoholic and drug user. As I began trying to walk that journey with him in and out of court dates鈥痑nd鈥痶hrough various recovery centers, I realized the need for a book that helps not only those who have messed up publicly, like my brother but also those who have messed up privately, like myself.鈥

Dr. Rappazini dedicated his book to anyone on that journey or walking it with a loved one.

鈥淢y hope is that with the God of Second Chances, they can turn their setback into a comeback and their mess into a powerful message,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 wrote the book to be used both individually and in groups. Along with the leader’s discussion guide, there are reflection and discussion questions at the end of each chapter. The hope is that the book can be used in recovery centers, prisons, and church groups because one of the first steps in moving forward after messing up is to engage with a support group that can encourage you, offer guidance, and provide wisdom every step of the way.鈥

Moving Forward After Messing Up: A New Future with the God of Second Chances is currently available for purchase through . It can also be found on and other online outlets.

“This is an exciting role for him, and a sign of what our students and graduates will be doing with this degree,” said Dr. Kyle Small, director of the Center for Leadership and Organizations. 鈥淏ailey is a remarkable student and focused on becoming a scholar and researcher; he is also growing as a leader. His presence in the program, alongside many of his peers, is exactly why I enjoy leading it.鈥

Bailey explained, “I will join the faculty of the Army War College, where I will then serve within a team of three to four instructors who lead a seminar of approximately 12-15 students. I will teach other classes during the electives period, but my focus will be within the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management. I will teach ethics, organizational design, and organizational leadership classes within this capacity. These topics dovetail well with what I have studied at 91福利社.”

Bailey noted that his students are military and civilian leaders with 20-plus years of experience leading in the military, other governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations and allied and partner nation militaries.

Bailey appreciates how the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations aligns with his own professional goals; for example, the course on executive coaching, which helped him through the thought processes of asking questions to assist leaders in formulating goals, priorities and an action plan; and then implementing an accountability system for the execution and assessment of the action plan.

“I will be working with strategic leaders; they do not need someone to come in and give them a program. They need somebody to help them think things through; executive coaching is an ideal tool for that,” Bailey said.

Bailey entered the U.S. Army after graduating high school. He served as a maintenance soldier and noncommissioned officer before going to college to study biology and chemistry.

I was in the ROTC program at the University of Texas El Paso because I love serving my country, and I was going to attend medical school. However, then I surrendered to ministry about halfway through that,” said Bailey, who became a Christian as a teenager through a Bible study at a Presbyterian church in his hometown. He received a master of divinity degree at Baylor University, then served in a small country church before re-entering the Army, serving for more than 20 years as a chaplain.

Bailey feels the chaplaincy has prepared him well for the role he is entering at the U.S. Army War College.

“I do not want to downgrade what we do in the spiritual sense or denigrate the import of what we do in a chapel, but the chapel is a leadership laboratory in many ways because you are leading people, and of course, you are leading through influence,” Bailey said. “You do not have command authority to make people come to church, but they choose to come because you positively influence them to grow spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and relationally. You are leading through influence, hopefully, grounded in scripture.”

Bailey feels that his Ph.D. in leadership program from the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations has helped him further hone his leadership skills.

I would recommend this program for anyone who is looking at how to professionally develop themselves as an advisor on leadership, especially if they want to integrate faith with leadership, because this program does an excellent job of dovetailing faith into leadership in a way that is academically rigorous and grounded in the best academic studies of leadership and organizational behavior,” Bailey said. “Whether you are in a faith-based or non-faith-based organization, I believe this program is beneficial for helping develop informed leaders with honed analytical skills.”

This Fulbright research examines changes in trust between public, for profit, and nonprofit organizational partnerships in the city of Jaguari煤na, Brazil, where Dr. Caito鈥檚 host institution (UniEduK) has a campus. Field research will be conducted through two, two-month long trips over the next two summers.听

鈥淏razil is an exemplary context for this research where organizations face many economic, political, and social uncertainties when partnering. My Brazilian colleague, Dr. Francisco Salles Souza, will be a great help to me,鈥 Dr. Caito said. 鈥淭his research will collect data through surveys and interviews of organizational leaders and employ organizational network analysis (ONA) and process tracing methods to examine their perceptions of other leaders鈥 competence, benevolence and integrity in the partnership.鈥

This research project will strengthen the relationship between Dr. Caito鈥檚 host institution and 91福利社. In addition to the research, he will make himself available to his host institution for public lectures, invite their students to learn from this research, and develop future collaborative opportunities with their faculty. Further, it will teach these organizational leaders how to optimize mutual trust to transition their temporary collaborations into durable partnerships amid great uncertainty and extend that trust through their shared social networks for greater mutual benefit.

Dr. Caito is among more than 800 U.S. citizens who will teach or conduct research abroad for the 2024-2025 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. Fulbrighters engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks, often continuing research collaborations started abroad and laying the groundwork for forging future partnerships between institutions. Upon returning to their home countries, institutions, labs, and classrooms, they share their stories and often become active supporters of international exchange, inviting foreign scholars to campus and encouraging colleagues and students to go abroad.听

As Fulbright Scholar alumni, their careers are enriched by joining a network of thousands of esteemed scholars, many of whom are leaders in their fields. Notable include 62 Nobel Prize laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize recipients, 78 MacArthur Fellows, and 41 who have served as a head of state or government. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants from over 160 countries鈥攃hosen for their academic merit and leadership potential鈥攚ith the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to challenges facing our communities and our world.

鈥91福利社 is proud of Dr. Caito and grateful that the Fulbright U.S. Scholar program has afforded him this unique opportunity for the next two summers,鈥 said Dr. Ryan Neal, provost at 91福利社. 鈥淚 am convinced that Dr. Caito鈥檚 on-site efforts in 2024 and 2025 will enrich his host institution and country, and they will also inform his teaching and support his research. 91福利社 is committed to global engagement. He joins a growing list of Fulbright recipients on our faculty. We are now home to six Fulbright winners; including two in English (Dr. Wayne Cox and Dr. Kolawole Olaiya, who is currently in Nigeria for the 2023-2024 academic year), one in Business (Dr. Kent Saunders), one in Art & Design (Dr. Candace Livingston), and one in Music (Dr. Richard Williamson).鈥

More than 800 U.S. scholars — faculty members, artists, and professionals from all backgrounds — teach or conduct research overseas through the annually. In addition, more than 2,000 U.S. students, artists, and early career professionals from all backgrounds in more than 100 different fields of study receive awards annually to study, teach English, and conduct research overseas.听听

The听is the U.S. government鈥檚 flagship international educational exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State鈥檚 Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program. In the fully-online Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership program, working professionals explore complexities and challenges within organizations of all kinds. Here鈥檚 a look at a few of the Ph.D. graduates who successfully defended their dissertations and received their doctoral degrees during Winter Commencement December 15, 2023.听听

Dr. Sharon Black鈥檚 research grew out of what she has seen in her many years of community health experience. Dr. Black, who is director of Integrated Behavioral Services at Hope Health in Florence, South Carolina, researched challenges faced by African American women in leadership roles across the state at Federally Qualified Community Health Centers (FQHC).

鈥淭hey talked about the lack of diversity. Especially as you go higher up the ladder, there were fewer people who looked like them,鈥 she said. 鈥淚n the FQHC world, when you look at the population that we serve, the higher you go up the ladder, it doesn鈥檛 always represent the population it serves.鈥澨

Women leaders she interviewed talked about misconceptions which included things like tone of voice and body language, asserting that they are mistakenly seen by their colleagues as angry when, more accurately, their response is 鈥淚鈥檓 just passionate about what I do.鈥 She also tackled the issue of a lack of mentors for African American women in leadership, something she experienced early in her career.

Of her own experiences, Dr. Black said, 鈥淚 felt like I had to go and find my own resources just to be a better leader. Because I didn鈥檛 have those things in place really kind of put me at a disadvantage, although I persevered and found resources for myself, but I didn鈥檛 have that person saying 鈥榯hese are things you should do as a leader.鈥欌

Dr. Black feels that her Ph.D. work has been rewarding and she hopes to help other women like her who are navigating the complexities of leadership.听

Dr. Jennifer Suber鈥檚 research was titled COVID Implications for Southeastern States: A Thematic Analysis of Influences from Leaders, Health Agencies and Social Media platforms. She examined social media activity in her thematic analysis that compared and contrasted social media tweets during the height of the pandemic from three sources: the President of the United States, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). She also analyzed statistics on the number of days it took states to implement public mask mandates.

When she was looking into doctoral programs, Dr. Suber, who works as a Post-merger Integration Specialist at Bosch, felt that going out of state wasn鈥檛 going to be an option. Then she discovered the Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership program at 91福利社.听

鈥淚 travel a lot for work, and then I also have a family鈥 you鈥檝e got to find that balance,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen you go out of state, you鈥檙e looking at increased cost, because you鈥檙e paying out-of-state tuition. Also, a lot of the programs are one or two weeks per summer or per session鈥攊t鈥檚 just added costs because you鈥檝e got to pay for hotels and you鈥檝e got to pay to fly in or drive in, however you plan to get there.鈥

鈥淚 always am a big advocate for education,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 thought about maybe doing some adjunct teaching going forward. Certainly the leadership degree will help just within my own career today.鈥

Dr. Coleman Smoak looked at pursuing doctoral work as his retirement was approaching from a career of 44 years in the community-owned utility field.听

His research focused on doctrinal literacy among lay leaders in Southern Baptist churches. Dr. Smoak interviewed pastors and ministry leaders at 10 churches in the same Baptist association to determine if lay leaders are assessed on matters such as knowledge of Baptist doctrine and specifically the Baptist Faith and Message.听

鈥淚 just talked to them about how they go about ensuring that their lay leaders have the right knowledge, have the right motivation and how they determine whether these people indeed have a knowledge of Southern Baptist doctrine,鈥 he said. He found that while ministers were concerned about apathy and complacency among their congregants, little was actually being done to address the issue among lay leaders. Dr. Smoak hopes that his research will spur on additional research and that both pastors and lay leaders would 鈥渟tep up鈥 to improve assessment and training.

Dr. Smoak is grateful that he found the Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership program offered by the Center for Leadership and Organizations. He said the program not only takes into account his previous master鈥檚 work, but also his years of professional experience.

鈥淚 have always been a lifelong learner, so I was interested in learning some more, plus I was looking for a challenge,鈥 he added. 鈥淚 think it will affect the way I work in my local church, the way I view Bible study鈥 and I think it鈥檚 going to affect me talking with the lay leadership about ways we can do things differently.鈥

鈥淧reaching as Leadership鈥 is the theme for the 2023 Evangelical Homiletics Society (EHS) Conference October 12-14 at 91福利社.

Plenary speakers are Dr. Kyle Small, professor of leadership and director of the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations; and Dr. Pamela Larde, associate professor of leadership at 91福利社 and director of education at Institute of Coaching (McLean/Harvard Medical School).

Dr. Small has served as a pastor, professor, academic administrator and a professional coach. His life as a leader and a teacher finds resonance as he explores the alignment between mission and practice for both organizations and individuals. He has a passion to discover the world through theologically shaped social research. His research has focused on leadership, organizations, human formation and action research.

Dr. Larde is the founder of both the Academy of Creative Coaching and Tandem Light Press. She has served as a professor, coach, award-winning author and business owner. She has a passion for engaging in the work of advancing the reach and commitment of the coaching profession to serve and build up heart-centered leaders around the world while being intentional about integrating values of belonging, human dignity, justice and care for the whole person into every fiber of her work.

In addition to the plenary sessions, there will also be a panel discussion, a presentation of papers, an awards banquet, a celebration luncheon and worship services.

A detailed conference schedule, travel and lodging information and an online registration link are available . Online streaming of plenary sessions is also available. 91福利社 students and faculty can attend the conference for free, but will still need to register.

Many 91福利社 faculty members have served in EHS leadership roles over the years, including Dr. Kris Barnett, current president and Drs. Chris Rappazini and Michael Duduit as past presidents; also Clamp Divinity School professor Dr. Dante Wright has served on the EHS board.

According to Dr. Barnett, who serves as current EHS president and is associate dean as well as a professor at 91福利社鈥檚 Clamp Divinity School, the conference is hosted each year at a seminary or a university with an embedded seminary. For instance, conferences have been hosted by Moody Bible Institute, Truett Seminary, Southeastern Seminary and Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.

Attending the conference are people who teach preaching in an academic setting, but also Ph.D. students, D.Min. students and pastors who are serious about the academics of preaching, according to Dr. Rappazini, who is site host for this year鈥檚 conference and serves as a professor of leadership in the 91福利社 Center of Leadership and Organizations.

Drs. Barnett and Rappazini are excited about the direction EHS is taking, drawing in conference attendees not only from across the United States but also from Canada, England and as far away as Australia.

鈥淲e had a pretty interesting piece that developed because of the world homiletics emphasis last year,鈥 Dr. Barnett said. 鈥淲e had a professor from Kenya who was one of our plenary speakers. One of the things he was working on was developing the African Homiletics Society, and so we now have a partnership, an affiliate member we are related to, and that鈥檚 been a great experience for me.鈥

EHS was established more than 25 years ago by Dr. Scott Gibson, who taught homiletics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary; and Dr. Keith Willhite, who taught at Dallas Theological Seminary. Drs. Gibson and Wilhite desired an academic society for the exchange of ideas related to instruction of biblical preaching. In addition, there was a need for increased competence for teachers of preaching; integration of the fields of communication, biblical studies, and theology; and scholarly contributions to the field of homiletics.

EHS Membership Benefits include connection and networking with others who teach preaching, including senior professors; opportunities to interact with publishers; scholarly and practical enrichment; spiritual encouragement; improved teaching; and a complimentary subscription to Preaching Magazine.

EHS holds annual meetings that include worship and preaching, presentation of academic papers, interaction with colleagues and publishers, professional dialogue, fellowship and a portion of free time for local sightseeing. The Society also offers access to papers presented at the annual meeting.

Pamela Larde, Ph.D., a professor in the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations, has published her latest book, Joyfully Single: A Revolutionary Guide for Enlightenment, Wholeness, and Change, which will become available October 1, 2023.

Dr. Larde鈥檚 book explores singleness among people over 30 and societal misconceptions associated with it. At the same time, Joyfully Single encourages those who are single, regardless of their circumstances, to embrace who they are and live with purpose.

鈥淚 don’t address how to date in the book, because that’s not what the book is about,鈥 Dr. Larde said. 鈥淚 do address what it means now that you’re in the situation that you’re single and there’s sometimes a negative connotation put on that.鈥

Dr. Larde talks about issues confronting single individuals of various generations, exploring the complexities of divorce, dating and ever-changing societal norms, how the COVID pandemic has affected singles, and also the striking differences between perceptions of single men and single women, as well as how each deals with their own singlehood differently.

Dr. Larde says that she found writing Joyfully Single both gratifying and challenging.

鈥淐hallenging, because there are my own stories. Some ways that I’m giving some of my own stories; it鈥檚 gratifying because I feel like I’m helping a population of people who really, really need it,鈥 she said. 鈥淚’ve engaged in a lot of interviews and conversations and I’ve heard the way people are suffering, men and women, being single, because sometimes people come into being single. In fact, as soon as I finished writing this book, someone very close to me lost his fianc茅e. She died suddenly. And so I’ve talked to people who have lost people to the pandemic and injustice. So there’s a lot of sadness and really tough emotions people are navigating through, their being single. The gratifying part was knowing that I can help people through some of that.鈥

Joyfully Single also explores what scripture says about singlehood, such as I Corinthians, 7:8-9, in which the Apostle Paul wrote to the unmarried and the widows, 鈥渋t is good for them to remain single as I am. But if they can’t exercise self control they should marry鈥︹

Dr. Larde describes her takeaway point from Paul.

鈥淗ere’s what I learned. When you are steeped in purpose and knee deep in discovering yourself while single, it is best not to distract that process by spending all of your time, focus and energy on the pursuit of a spouse. It is best not to marry if it is only for the sake of marrying. It is best not to marry if you’re living in a state of toxic or malicious joy. It is best not to marry if you’re settling for a situation that doesn’t bring you joy. It is best not to marry if you’re doing it for the fear of never marrying. This is the time to dive into the joy of singlehood. I believe this is why Paul takes the stance, not because marriage is bad or for the weak, but because the vision and focus of a married couple are vastly different from the vision and focus of someone who is single. Our possibilities are different, the way we move is different, our impact is different.鈥

for Joyfully Single: A Revolutionary Guide for Enlightenment, Wholeness, and Change, which will be released in October. Dr. Larde has a book tour planned for September in her home base of Atlanta as well as Los Angeles, New York and Milwaukee, where copies of her book will also be available for purchase.

In addition to being a professor at 91福利社, Dr. Larde is a certified coach, award-winning author and business owner. She is committed to engaging in the work of advancing the reach and commitment of the coaching profession to serve and build up heart-centered leaders around the world.

鈥淚 love that our faculty work at the highest levels of peer-reviewed scholarship and the equally important level of public scholarship. Dr. Larde鈥檚 book is a sign of what great teachers do鈥攖hey know their fields of study yet are always finding ways to connect with the broader public to make an impact. This is Dr. Larde鈥檚 natural way of engaging the world as a professor and a Christian,鈥 said Dr. Kyle Small, professor of leadership and director of the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations.

The 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations is an innovative program specifically designed to equip individuals for the highest level of scholarship and leadership in business, ministry, education, public service, healthcare, and non-profit organizations. Dr. Anthony Caito of the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations attended the twelfth Workshop on Trust Within and Between Organizations in Helsinki, Finland, where he also made two presentations before an international audience.

Dr. Caito joined researchers from around the globe studying theoretical and practical aspects of trust between people in organizational settings. The workshop, which took place June 14-17, was organized by First International Network on Trust (FINT), LUT University, and University of Eastern Finland (UEF), and was co-sponsored by the Institute for Research in Social Sciences (IRiSS) Stanford University.

The FINT website states, 鈥淭rust is a fundamental element in organizing human activity. It has a focal role in enhancing communication, collaboration and commitment in private, public, third sector organizations and social movements. Trust connects people and enables collective value co-creation, yet the current social, economic, technological, and political changes challenge trust as we know it. The world is facing severe challenges that cannot be solved without human collaboration.鈥

Dr. Caito presented 鈥淎 Research Design for Interorganizational Trust Amongst Uncertainty鈥 and 鈥淢odeling Interorganizational Trust Amongst Uncertainty鈥 at the workshop. Dr. Caito and some other presenters were paired with senior trust scholars as mentors from around the world. Dr. Caito was paired with Shay Tzafrir of the University of Haifa, Israel.

鈥淗e鈥檚 been examining trust for a long time,鈥 Dr. Caito said. 鈥淗e provided some excellent feedback for months prior, and then at the conference. That was a really enjoyable experience and helpful for preparing my paper for publication.鈥

Dr. Caito, who typically studies fragile states, explained, 鈥淐ountries that are considered fragile have dysfunctional institutions and citizens don’t know what to expect from the government from one day to the next.鈥

Despite perceived problems within the United States, Dr. Caito contends that Americans have greater reason for institutional trust and confidence than many other countries.

鈥淚n my research, what I’m finding is that there are unique opportunities for different forms and types of trust in those settings where there’s lots of uncertainty due to institutional dysfunction than in places like the United States and Finland where there is much more certainty.鈥

The increasing complexity of most organizations in a fast-changing world underscores a critical demand for attentive leaders who seek to serve beyond their own interests.

Mindful of this, 91福利社 developed an innovative doctoral program aimed at preparing individuals to face the challenges of guiding organizations with wisdom and vision.

Offered through the 91福利社 Center for Leadership & Organizations, the Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership is an online degree program designed to prepare individuals for the highest level of scholarship and leadership in business, ministry, education, public service, healthcare and non-profit organizations.

Students enrolled in the Ph.D. in Leadership can align their program to their particular goals and research interests, providing several pathways to build research skills to advance an organization, community, business, ministry, or church. The program focuses on culture, change and self-awareness for creatively leading complex organizations.

An added value for the Ph.D. in Leadership program is that students become friends, colleagues and research partners. The program is led by a core faculty with scholarly and professional expertise in a variety of fields and industries, and diverse part-time faculty located from coast-to-coast. The program offers flexibility of course scheduling and faculty who are readily available.

The Ph.D. in Leadership at 91福利社 currently has two concentrations with more on the way: Christian Ministry and Business. The program is offered fully online (including a synchronous online engagement) and can be completed in 3-4 years.

The concentrations equip individuals for the highest level of scholarship and performance in diverse organizations.

鈥淚t seems good and right that the graduate edge of a comprehensive Christian university is an interdisciplinary center and degree program focused on forming leaders in faith and enlivening organizations for the common good. This is the aim of the Center and the substance of our research,鈥 said Dr. Kyle J. A. Small, Professor and Director, Center for Leadership and Organizations.

For more information, contact Benjamin Brammer, Ph.D., at 864-231-2039 or email bbrammer@andersonuniversity.edu. Also, further details about the program can be found online.

The 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations is adding three new faculty members whose substantial combined experience is further enhancing the Ph.D. in Leadership program.

鈥淭he most exciting thing is building a team that will better serve our students both in the coursework and in writing their dissertations,鈥 said Dr. Kyle Small, director of the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations. 鈥淢ore importantly, when the Ph.D. program started, it was business or ministry. What鈥檚 happened is we鈥檝e got students from higher education, ministry, business, criminal justice, even health professions. Our newly established faculty team brings experience and research from each of those industries. The faculty team we have now is multidisciplinary and multi-industry, which will only serve our students and enhance our program.鈥

Joining the 91福利社 Center for Leadership and Organizations faculty are Drs. Drs. Chris Rappazini, Maria Lai-ling Lam and Tony Caito.
