Music Audition Requirements

An audition is required for students interested in enrolling as a music major in the South Carolina School of the Arts. Upon submitting an 91¸£ÀûÉç application, students are able to register for any available review dates. All audition questions can be directed to scschoolofthearts@andersonuniversity.edu.

General Requirements

  1. Please bring one printed letter of recommendation with you from a music teacher or worship leader who is familiar with you and your skills.
  2. Please bring a printed essay (no more than 500 words) answering the following questions:
    • What are the main reasons you want to attend 91¸£ÀûÉç and the South Carolina School of the Arts?
    • Based on your skills, abilities, and personal qualities, what do you think you can contribute to the music department at the South Carolina School of the Arts?
    • What are your most important educational and career goals within the next five years? What are your long-term goals?

Based on your intended major, audition requirements are as follows:

BA in Music, BM Vocal Performance and BME Music Education (Vocal/Choral)

  • Prepare and fully memorize two contrasting pieces – one selection from classical vocal literature and one in the style of your choice. An accompanist will be provided.
  • Be prepared to sight read and sight sing simple rhythms and melodies.
  • Be prepared to complete a test of vocal range, vocal quality, and tonal memory.
  • You will be asked to complete a Theory Placement test. This assessment does not factor into admission into the department. Rather, it is used to properly place students in theory classes should they decide to attend.
  • Dress to impress: You are encouraged to wear professional attire at your audition similar to what you would wear at a professional interview.

BA in Music, BM Instrumental Performance, BM Piano Performance, BM Piano Performance and Pedagogy, BME Music Education (Instrumental)

  • Prepare two contrasting pieces from standard repertory on your primary instrument.
  • Know appropriate scales and arpeggios for your instrument.
  • Be prepared to sight read and sight sing simple rhythms and melodies.
  • You will be asked to complete a Theory Placement test. This assessment does not factor into admission into the department. Rather, it is used to properly place students in theory classes should they decide to attend.
  • Dress to impress: You are encouraged to wear professional attire at your audition similar to what you would wear at a professional interview.

BM Commercial Music and BM Worship Leadership (Vocal)
