A new album is coming out from AUthenticity, one of the premier commercial Music ensembles in the South Carolina School of the Arts at 91福利社.
Full of original music created by the students, the album was recorded in the new Music Media studios, part of the Johnny Mann Center for Commercial Music. AUthenticity鈥檚 album will be released April 30, 2022 during downtown Anderson鈥檚 Soiree. It will be available on CD and popular music streaming platforms.
鈥淭he album is now done and is on the way to be mixed right now,鈥� said Dr. Derick Cordoba, director of the Johnny Mann Center for Commercial Music and assistant professor of music.
鈥淥ur album consists of pop, rock, R&B, blues, Latin, acoustic ballads and jazz fusion,鈥� said AUthenticity member Max Milian, a senior commercial music major.
With eight songwriters, there are eight distinctive personalities.
鈥淲e come from different walks of life with different musical traditions, based on our cultural backgrounds and things like that鈥� Every track you鈥檙e going to jump into a different musical world. That鈥檚 what makes it really exciting,鈥� Milian said.
Creating and performing their own songs helps students grow as musicians, according to Dr. Cordoba.
鈥淭he idea was they write songs and we do some in their featured concert. Initially we thought that maybe three songs would be good to do for the concert,鈥� Dr. Cordoba said. 鈥淚t turned out that the eight songs were great and all very different. Last semester we did a concert called 鈥楻edefining AUthenticity,鈥� which was really about bringing all this original music to the group. Everything was so good. We decided that we have eight originals鈥攖hat鈥檚 an album鈥攍et鈥檚 do an album.鈥�
AUthenticity members include Milian (keyboards, vocals, student musical director), Otis Todd (bass, keyboards, vocals), Sincere Hatten (saxophone, vocals), Kyra Morgan (vocals), Caitlyn Burger (vocals), Michael Ford (guitar), Sadler Jones (drummer, bass) and guest drummer Dalvin Gray on some original songs. Technicians are Cheyenne Williams and EJ Jones.
AUthenticity members aren鈥檛 just performing. They鈥檙e learning about the music industry.
鈥淓very week we get to hear from a professional in the industry, from someone who鈥檚 working and doing one of the things that we鈥檙e doing in the classroom we want to do,鈥� said Morgan. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e constantly talking about how important it is to network and to get to know others.鈥�
鈥淚 think 91福利社 is the first place where I feel I can be a successful songwriter. When I brought my song here everyone loved it and I wasn鈥檛 expecting that. I sing and write songs. That鈥檚 the area I want to go in,鈥� Todd said. 鈥淭his place provided a good avenue, good honest criticism and also encouragement.鈥�
鈥淥utside of music, the South Carolina School of the Arts really pushes this idea of being a professional,鈥� Hatten said. 鈥淚 think striving to achieve (professionalism) every day and all of the time teaches you this code of conduct that makes you continue to push yourself when you fall short of doing those things you feel like are required of you to become what you want to be in the music world. Just having that available to you definitely sets you up for success unlike any other place.鈥�
Sadler Jones, a bassist and drummer, loves working and playing with other musicians as part of the creative process. As a Christian Studies major, Jones feels a sense of belonging as he plays with AUthenticity.
鈥淚 feel very much included in part of it and get a lot of merit out of the program even though I鈥檓 just a minor,鈥� Jones said. 鈥淚 spend time working on a song basically. The really exciting part is I get to bring it to fellow musicians and to my friends and their input and we kind of see where it goes. It鈥檚 not just like I have to figure out everything and bring it to them, it鈥檚 鈥榟ere鈥檚 what I have started, let鈥檚 talk about it. And that鈥檚 a really sweet nice thing to have, is friends. It鈥檚 a freeing thing to do that.鈥�
Dalvin Gray, a guest musician, sometimes plays drums for AUthenticity, which allows Jones to switch to Bass and Todd to switch to keyboards or vocals. Gray is related to Hatten and they鈥檝e played together a lot. He says, 鈥淚 continue to grow and teach myself new skills, watch other people play and pick up on things and try to use that in my everyday life.鈥�
鈥淲hile we鈥檙e refining our craft and preparing great shows, we鈥檙e also embarking on a deeply human journey together. That鈥檚 been the melody of AUthenticity for the last four years, especially now as we begin to write original songs together,鈥� Milian said. 鈥淎s you鈥檙e opening up your heart to each other, you鈥檙e being vulnerable and it provides for all these ways for you to get to know someone and experience life with someone in things that are not put to words or not done through verbal communication, just through playing together. That鈥檚 what we鈥檙e doing.鈥�
