Students in these new programs will learn foundational educational theories from professors who have many years of classroom experience themselves. They will also have the opportunity to hone the skills they learn through student teaching and other opportunities. Students will be prepared to earn their teaching certification for the state of South Carolina for Secondary Chemistry (grades 9-12). Current state regulations also allow them to use this certification in seventh and eighth grade positions.
Certified secondary science educators are in high demand and the certification of graduates is recognized by many states. Graduates are prepared to teach in a variety of places, explore additional career opportunities, or continue their higher education journey. 91福利社 education graduates work in charter, public and private schools; also, agencies that specialize in child development, education advocacy and ministry.
The 91福利社 College of Education has strong partnerships with local school districts, both public and private. These partnerships allow students to learn through embedded clinical experiences and spend time in classrooms throughout their time at 91福利社. While at Anderson, students have the opportunity to join the Secondary Education Club, Education Club, or Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Club.
Each year the College of Education hosts hiring personnel from across the state and region at their Fall and Spring Networking Events. These events allow teacher candidates to learn about employment opportunities and participate in formal job interviews. According to 91福利社 College of Education Dean Dr. Mark Butler, many candidates will receive their first formal job offers through these on-campus opportunities.
鈥淎s an alumnus of 91福利社, a former middle and high school classroom teacher, and now professor at Anderson, I am super excited for the launching of these two programs,鈥� said Trisha Childress, coordinator of secondary science education in the 91福利社 College of Arts and Sciences. 鈥淚 have seen first-hand the level of respect given to graduates of AU鈥檚 education programs. There is a great need for science educators who are passionate about learners and their chosen field of science. I can鈥檛 think of a better place to earn a degree in Science Education. I look forward to working with each of the students who chose to enter these programs as their advisor.鈥�
